<description>SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN FOR 10 CAMERAS ON INDIEGOGO

The Impact

10 cameras teach a class of 30-40 kids: In our classes and workshops, we like to have three or four children per camera for a few reasons: 1) When one child is taking a picture, having at least two other kids on the other side of the cameras helps to make dynamic images. 2) Kids learn creativity and photography skills from each other, not to mention sharing and helping younger children. 3) we teach in areas that can be dangerous, like the notorious slums of Kibera and Cite Soleil, so having a group of children and one adult around each camera makes for a safer experience.

Please help us get to our goal! You can buy a pretty nice digital camera for $100, and for $1000 we can buy 10. If we buy more cameras, we will leave one camera at each new location, with a children's organization to make sure it is shared and properly used. If we don't make our goal, we will buy fewer cameras and teach smaller workshops until our goal is met.

Alisa May and Tegan Bukowski designed a proposal for a community center and soccer facility by Lake Kivu in Rwanda seen above (no that soccer field doesn't already exist). We are calling it L'Esperance Kid’s Community Soccer by Lake Kivu. The competition is sponsored by Nike and Architecture for Humanity who will support the development of the project over the next year if we win.

"One km away from the site of the largest massacre of individuals during the Rwandan genocide, L’Esperance Children’s Aid in partnership with Artists Activists is looking to build a soccer field and sports playground with a covered enclosure that also serves as a community center."

**Update** After getting to the last 10, we were put on a waitlist of runner ups. Although we didn't win, we learned a lot of and are so excited that some of the other wonderful designs are getting support!

See the rest of our proposal on their website!

		<description>Colombia and ASODEA

Seth Caplan of ArtistsActivists developed art and photography workshops for the youth population of ASODEA. According to the ASODEA's goal in bringing art and photography to their youth population to give them a place to explore and process their journey as a displaced person in Colombia, Seth developed two workshops to fulfill ASODEA's needs and stay in line with ArtistsActivist's mission to promote youth empowerment through our workshops with kids all over the world. The workshops include a children's art class, a teen art class and a photo class for ages 13-23. Each of the three classes meets 5 times over the course of two weeks. All of the classes relate to the theme of exploring the city around us and how we relate to it. Instead of directly dealing with each person's journey as a displaced person, Seth decided to use their new home of the city of Envigado as a way to connect to those experiences. The art workshop focuses on experimenting with pastels and watercolor to making abstract drawings in relation to Envigado. In these classes, Seth explores various artists such as Kandinsky and Miro, and focuses on how the students relate to Envigado through their five senses.

The final form of the project will be an artist's book of all the drawings the students make. The photography class focuses on how to use the camera as a way to observe one's surroundings and how one can be a witness in their city in order to better explore one's relationship with it. In the class, Seth explores artists such as Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and Boris Savelev, while leading technical and conceptual photographic exercises. Students will have at least one final printed photo to keep at the end of the workshop.

		<description>Ghana

"Hi, we’re Tully and Faith. We recently graduated from Yale University -- Faith in 2010, Tully in 2011. We think it’s important that those who want to make an impact in the world’s developing countries as young, smart individuals from developed countries do so with simple and meaningful projects that respond to real needs."

Faith is a budding documentary filmmaker pursuing a master’s degree. Tully won a public service fellowship to start a youth radio project focused on agriculture in rural Ghana. A Canadian NGO with whom he is working has connected him to the top agricultural and social development station in Ghana, Rite FM, broadcasting from Somanya in the Eastern Region.

Now that the project’s in full swing (see video for details), we want you to unite us in Ghana – to send Faith across the ocean with video and audio equipment so she can capture the creative growth process of young Ghanaians that Tully is teaching, from the first timid mic-checks and throat-clearings to the loud final broadcast.

Impact:

This film documents a project that brings the excitement of competition to bear on youth radio focusing on agricultural and community development. Agriculture has been called the way forward for economies like Ghana’s, and agricultural radio stations that integrate other technologies are serving farmers in even the most remote ares. We want to document the importance of this type of radio work.

Primarily, we are telling a story about learning to produce radio that is a voice by and for the community. You will see the impact of this program in the lives of the participants – follow them as the find their own voices and their own ways of leadership. We’ll be showing you the joy, the achievement, and the youth potential that is so often overlooked in the developing world by the world’s media when crises loom.

The Kibera Photo Project was a photography workshop with kids aged 8-14 in the Kibera Slum of Nairobi Kenya directed by Rachel Brown, Cody Valdes and Tegan Bukowski. The project began as an offshoot of the Digital Democracy Project Einstein photography curriculum as a part of the launching of Sisi Ni Amani, a peace/community promoting organization also in Nairobi. Evans Kamau from Hot Sun Foundation (also who the movie Togetherness Supreme is based on) acted as our guide through Kibera!!

Seth Caplan and Tegan Bukowski spent the weekend printing, cutting, and hanging the kids photos from the Kibera Photo Project. There will be a reception Saturday 29 October from 6:00-8:00 at the Study in New Haven, CT. Click through to see the hanging process and some sneak peeks of the exhibition. The exhibition is supported by the Study, with special efforts from Anthony Moir, and Robie-Lyn Harnois. Thank you so much!!
